Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport

After arriving at the Airport, you will be picked up by a Kiwonu Africa Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Later on, you will enjoy dinner with your group before being briefed on the trek followed by an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. We can organize the rental of any missing equipment should it be needed.

Day 1: High-Altitude Drop-Off to Shira 1 Camp

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 3,600 m (11,811 ft) to 3,505 m (11,499 ft)
Starting from Arusha, you’ll be driven to a high-altitude drop-off point near the Shira Ridge. This drop-off provides a scenic, relatively flat trek across the Shira Plateau. Enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding landscape before arriving at Shira 1 Camp for an overnight rest.

Day 2: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 3,505 m (11,499 ft) to 3,845 m (12,615 ft)
Continue trekking across the stunning Shira Plateau, a high-altitude volcanic plain with breathtaking views of Kibo Peak. Reach Shira 2 Camp, where you’ll spend the night, enjoying panoramic views and preparing for the higher altitudes ahead

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower, Descent to Barranco Camp

Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation: 3,845 m (12,615 ft) to 4,630 m (15,190 ft) to 3,960 m (12,992 ft)
Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630 meters) for an acclimatization stop, then descend to Barranco Camp. This trek follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, aiding acclimatization and providing views of the iconic Western Breach and Breach Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Elevation: 3,960 m (12,992 ft) to 4,035 m (13,235 ft)
Today begins with the thrilling ascent of Barranco Wall. This moderately challenging climb provides spectacular photo opportunities. Traverse through valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp for the night.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Elevation: 4,035 m (13,235 ft) to 4,673 m (15,331 ft)
Today’s trek leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. Arriving in the afternoon, you’ll rest, have an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight ascent to the summit.

Day 6: Ascent to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles) ascent to the summit; 12 km (7.5 miles) descent to Millennium Camp
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours to the summit; 5-6 hours descent
Elevation: 4,673 m (15,331 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft), then down to 3,820 m (12,533 ft)
Start your ascent around midnight, reaching Stella Point at sunrise. From there, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, begin the descent to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Day 7: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 3,820 m (12,533 ft) to 1,640 m (5,381 ft)
Complete the descent through the montane forest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Afterward, you’ll be driven back to Arusha to celebrate your successful climb.
