This 8-day journey provides excellent acclimatization opportunities, increasing the chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport

After arriving at the Airport, you will be picked up by a Kiwonu Africa Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Later on, you will enjoy dinner with your group before being briefed on the trek followed by an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. We can organize the rental of any missing equipment should it be needed.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 2,360 m (7,742 ft) to 2,895 m (9,498 ft)
After registration at Londorossi Gate, you’ll begin trekking through lush rainforest toward Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), spotting wildlife like colobus monkeys along the way.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 2,895 m (9,498 ft) to 3,505 m (11,499 ft)
Trek through heather and moorland zones, enjoying views of the Shira Ridge and Kibo Peak. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp on the Shira Plateau for an overnight stay.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 3,505 m (11,499 ft) to 3,845 m (12,615 ft)
Cross the beautiful Shira Plateau, a high-altitude volcanic plain with scenic vistas of Kilimanjaro’s peaks. Reach Shira 2 Camp, where you’ll rest and continue acclimatizing.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower, Descent to Barranco Camp

Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation: 3,845 m (12,615 ft) to 4,630 m (15,190 ft) to 3,960 m (12,992 ft)
Ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630 m) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This day follows the “climb high, sleep low” approach, helping your body adjust to higher altitudes.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Elevation: 3,960 m (12,992 ft) to 4,035 m (13,235 ft)
Begin the day by climbing the Barranco Wall for stunning views, then continue across several valleys to reach Karanga Camp. This day is shorter, allowing for further acclimatization.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Elevation: 4,035 m (13,235 ft) to 4,673 m (15,331 ft)
Ascend steadily to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. Arrive in the early afternoon, rest, and prepare for the midnight summit push with an early dinner

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Mweka Camp

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles) ascent to summit; 12 km (7.5 miles) descent to Mweka Camp
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours to summit; 4-6 hours descent
Elevation: 4,673 m (15,331 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft), then down to 3,068 m (10,065 ft)
Start the final ascent around midnight, reaching Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp for a restful evening.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 3,068 m (10,065 ft) to 1,640 m (5,381 ft)
Complete your descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After certificate presentations, return to Arusha for a well-earned celebration.
